| Platform | Russian Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| ВКонтакте (ВК) | VKontaktye | Russia's largest social network — like Facebook + Spotify combined. Music, groups, messaging. |
| Телеграм | Telegram | Hugely popular messaging app, also used for news channels and group chats. |
| Яндекс | Yandeks | Russia's Google — search, maps, taxi, food delivery, email, and more. |
| Одноклассники (ОК) | Adnaklassniki | "Classmates" — social network popular with older generations. |
| Дзен | Dzen | Yandex's content platform — blogs, articles, videos. |
💡 Cultural Insight: Russia has developed its own parallel digital ecosystem. Яндекс (Yandex) is often called "Russia's Google" but it's much more — it offers search, email, maps, taxi service (Яндекс Такси), food delivery (Яндекс Еда), music streaming, cloud storage, and even self-driving car research. ВКонтакте (VK) dominates social networking with built-in music streaming that made it enormously popular among young Russians.
| Slang | Full Form / Meaning | English Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| спс | спасибо | thx (thanks) |
| пжл / пож | пожалуйста | pls (please) |
| нзч | не за что | np (no problem) |
| лол | laugh out loud | lol |
| кст | кстати | btw (by the way) |
| имхо | по моему скромному мнению | imho |
| ладно / лан | — | ok / alright |
| )) or ))) | smile | :) — more )'s = bigger smile |
Russians use closing parentheses instead of smiley faces in text messages: ) = :) , ))) = 😄, ))))) = 🤣
A single ( means sadness. Messages without any parentheses can seem cold or formal to Russian readers! Not adding a ) when texting a friend might signal that you're upset.
